Living legend Amitabh Bachchan is the biggest star to have come out of Indian cinema in its 94 year-old history. Also a successful businessman, popular television show man and the highest paid ad campaigner, he is the first living Asian to have been immortalized at London’ Madame Tussaud’s.
Born to poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Tezi, Amitabh Bachchan is double MA in Arts and also a Science graduate. Giving up his job as a freight broker, he joined the filmdom in 1969. His film career, spanning over 178 movies so far, is divided in two parts. In early days he was the Angry Young Man fighting the Devil for nearly one and half decades up to 1984. He reached the pinnacle of Superstardom performing in Zanjeer Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Mukkadar Ki Sikandar Ram Balram, Shaan, Laawaris, Shakti, Don, .Kala Pathar, Amar Akbar Antony, Namak Halal, Coolie and others.
In 1984, Amitabh Bachchan turned to politics at the insistence of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected to Parliament, but resigned after three years. Soon he was implicated in the Bofors Scandal from which he came out clean. He returned to acting in 1988, but with little success. Amitabh Bachchan took a semi-retirement in 1992 and formed an entertainment company ABCL in 1996. Due to poor management, the company failed throwing him in acute financial crisis. Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh came to his rescue and he stepped up to host a television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000. His charisma made the show immensely popular and he continued till 2005. He also appeared in scores of ad campaigns and finally met all his debts and revived ABCL.
Amitabh Bachchan reappeared in films in 2000 playing older roles in hits like Baghban, Aks, Aankhein, Khakee, Ek Ajnabee, Black, Sarker ,Cheeni Kum and others. It is unprecedented in Indian cinema that a 60-plus man doing lead roles with major success. Winner of scores of National and International Awards, his is a celebrity family with actress wife Jaya, star son Abhishek and father-in-law of glamorous actress Aishwarya Rai.
